To honor the founding family of Ravelry, where Wool-Aid began, we have begun a special campaign to create items for children in sizes for infants through age 6. All of our focus items are included, just in smaller sizes! Items should be wool and warm, with good coverage, but no light colors and nothing frilly or lacy—sweaters, socks, hats, mittens, blankets, vests. All items should be knit or crocheted according to the standard Wool-Aid guidelines. “Shower gifts” received will be donated to two places, based on the need for the specific items received: Inuit Daycare Centers (via Warm Hands) that serve children from infant through age 6 (and which especially need hats and mittens); and Knit for Tibet, where there is a significant need for all types of items for babies and children.

Guidelines for Baby Shower Campaign

• Use the highest wool content possible (at least 80% wool/animal fiber) — 100% wool is even better.
• Use worsted weight yarn or heavier.
• All items should be crafted with an emphasis on coverage and warmth.
• Vests should close securely.
• Sweaters and vests should provide warmth from the neck down.
• Hats and mittens should protect against extreme cold.
• Socks should be densely knit and with good coverage for the leg as well as the foot.

Wool-Aid partnered with F.I.R.E.’s Dulaan Project to send warm, handcrafted woolen clothing and blankets to the children of Mongolia. The shipment included more than 130 pounds of sweaters, vests, hats, mittens, socks, neckwarmers, and blankets — 230 items in all — enough to warm many, many children!

A heartfelt thank-you to all of the wonderful knitters and crocheters who gave so generously to help warm the children of Mongolia. It is exceptionally difficult to provide aid to children in such remote places, but you did!

Our Sock Blitz campaign began in early August, 2010, and ended 100 days later, on November 15, 2010. Our goal was to collect 100 pairs of warm handknit socks in 100 days. By October 26, we had collected 103 pairs of socks.  So we set a new goal of 120 pairs, and we reached that on November 3. Then we set a revised goal of 150 pairs, reaching that goal on November 13!

After 100 days, our final count was 182 pairs of wonderfully warm handknit socks to warm the feet of children who live in desperately cold conditions. It has been decided that these socks will become the first shipment to the children of Kyegu, as part of our Knit for Tibet campaign.
